The Best Way to Maintain Wood Flooring

Max’s Flooring Can Help You Keep Your Wood Floors Looking Like New

We’re sharing the best way to maintain wood flooring as our inaugural blog. For more than 30 years, Max’s Flooring has installed wood floors, among others, so we know the do’s and don’ts. Therefore, we’d like to share some tips about cleaning your wood floors and keeping them looking like new. We highly recommend using a broom and a vacuum to remove dry dirt and dust. You can also dampen a microfiber mop with a mixture of diluted vinegar and olive oil after the dry clean. If you don’t already have them, we also recommend laying down area rugs to prevent scratches from furniture, shoes, and animals.

First, Clean Wood Floors with Brooms and with Vacuums

To clean dirt and debris from your wood floors, it’s a good idea to start with a soft-bristled, angled broom. The broom’s angles should be wide enough to get into corners. Don’t forget to move with the grain of the wood floor. After sweeping with a broom, break out the vacuum and use the soft floor nozzle. A vacuum’s brush rolls and carpet beaters can damage the wood floor’s finish. Some vacuums are made for cleaning wood floors. Robot vacuums are great, but try to avoid one that will vacuum itself into a corner.

Use Microfiber Mops, Diluted Vinegar, & Olive Oil to Wet Clean

While we certainly don’t suggest using a soaking wet mop, mops aren’t all bad for cleaning wood floors. Microfiber mops need less water than others … about 20 times less liquid. For a perfect clean and a shiny wood floor, we recommend using a mixture of diluted vinegar and olive oil. Add about 1/4 cup olive oil to a 1/3 cup white vinegar and five cups of hot water. Dampen the microfiber mop with the diluted vinegar and olive oil mixture to polish your wood floors while cleaning them. It’s almost like using a store-bought solution.

Lay Area Rugs Down on Dry Wood Floors to Prevent Scratches

After you’re done cleaning, lay down some area rugs. They’re not usually expensive and can be both aesthetically appealing and function in rooms with wood floors. One practical use for area rugs is they take the brunt of day-to-day foot traffic and furniture movement. Area rugs also protect your wood floors from sunlight, debris, dust and water damage from outdoors.
